I bought this game because it is precompiled, but this can be found for free for those savy techies.I'm glad these old games are being re-released none the less. Oldschool LucasFilm #1!. One of my favorite games ever. Discovered it on the old nes first and probably the first game that left me totally mesmerized by how different it was. If this game mean anything to you i recomend the excellent Thimbleweed Park by the two guys who made Maniac Mansion. Full of references to it. I disgress. If you never played maniac mansion before, it is an old point and click adventure game by lucasgames back in the days. You select 3 kids out of a possible 7. Who you pick changes the game somewhat since they each have their own little abilities wich allows you to solve different puzzles. This release include the old and also the improved version. Neither of wich feature voices. It's an old game. Barely any music . The nes version was better in that regard.. Serious technical issues. Mouse cursor jumps around like crazy during gameplay, which is a problem, seeing whereas it's a point and click adventure. I LOVED this game, but this is a terrible version of it. Not to mention that it is definitely emulated using a 3rd party software.Refund requested.. UPDATE: The high DPI mouse bug has been fixed. You now have more of a reason to buy this incredible game.Alright, listen up folks, before I review the actual game I’m going to take a minute to make a very clear note.If you are going to buy this game because you grew up with the NES port, don’t. This is the DOS and enhanced PC port that:-looks very different (and might I add, *cough* BETTER *cough*) from the NES version-lacks the music you love so much-is not 100% identical to the NES version (NES version had certain things cut because of Nintendo’s strict content policy back then)If you happen to want to play the NES version, your only hope is to download an emulator and ROM (oh no, piracy of a 30 year-old game!). If you want to play the PC version in a much more modern gamer-friendly state, get Maniac Mansion Deluxe from the Internet. It’s free and has enhanced graphics, lest your 4K HDR eyeballs can’t bear to look at this 16-color masterpiece.NOW WITH THAT OUT OF THE WAY... time for the actual review.I love Maniac Mansion. It’s one of my favorite games and despite it practically being a relic dug up from a tomb at this point it still holds up as one of the best adventure games out there. There are multiple characters to choose from, all with their own skills and useful abilities. The game world is very colorful (not literally) and there’s a lot of charm around every corner. There’s a whole lot of stuff going on all the time in this game and that’s what I love about it—and not to mention, it was one of the first truly nonlinear games out there. With a plot and characters based on B-movie horror archetypes, it somehow turns this stuff into gold with the addition of fun dialogue, creative environment, and well-executed humor. And it didn’t completely destroy the “horror” factor, either—accidentally running into any of the Edisons on your quest to save the dumb cheerleader is actually quite terrifying, even without any music.I’m not so sure how much more I can say about the game without totally spoiling the entire experience, but I do want to say that if you ever get stuck on any puzzles, don’t be afraid to google the solutions as this was a game made back when developers perceived gamers as psychic mind genies who opened envelopes with microwaves (hey, I just solved a puzzle for you!) also once again if you want the NES version get an emulator and a ROM and if you want to play a more modern version of the game, then get Deluxe. Complete with MIDI soundtrack! Also if you’ve played Maniac Mansion and liked it, make sure to check out Thimbleweed Park—it’s a very similar game released just last year by the exact same guys who designed MM.Oh, and one more quick note before I sign off...Don’t be a tuna head.. This is the first game I ever asked for a refund on. :( When I saw it on sale, it immediately took me back to fond memories of playing this game on my friend's NES, back when we were kids. I happily bought it, and enjoyed the silly opening sequence. I loved the odd colors, the blocky graphics, and everything else about it that screams "it's the 80's!" I was really looking forward to replaying through this odd little game, and hopefully, finally, getting to the end of it! (Never finished it, back in the day.) But there was that mouse cursor. And that's when everything went downhill. I played for about half an hour, getting more and more frustrated. The cursor is super-sensitive. If you don't nudge it perfectly, it jumps off to to some edge of the screen. You have to click on the commands in the list, and having a cursor that misbehaves like that is an exercise in frustration. Normally if controls are funky I can get the hang of it after playing around with it for a few minutes, getting used to the control quirks. Not this game. After half an hour I couldn't take it anymore. I requested a refund, and got my $4.01 back.. What a nice surprise! All the major Lucarts graphic adventure games have been released, except this. Until now. It would have been nice to get a remake like Day of the Tentacle, but this is good enough. And it comes with both C64 and Amiga(Enhanced) versions.. I don't really like the labor of old school IBM command menus these days. If you want to experience the labor of gaming in nineteen dictcy two, this is for you, if not, this game sucks. There is no realy explainable story arch to help you understand exactly what you are doing. It sucks to realize that 20+ years later that this game just sucks, and it only kept us going by employing lots of clicking. Save yourself the headache of a game with almost zero story line..
